A friend we knew from NYC was staying in Paris, so we met up with her to do a little self-made tour of some of Ernest Hemingway's haunts. We started here at Shakespeare & Co. where he reportedly spent a lot of time writing. He also may have stayed here because there are places for aspiring writers to sleep somewhere in the building.
The area of Paris where most of these places were is called the Latin Quarter & St Germain des Pres. We saw a lot of plaques noting famous writers who had lived or worked in the area, like James Joyce. Here's one telling us about Hemingway's apartment.
He lived on the 3rd floor in this building, which I think is really the 4th floor for us Americans.
They count differently in France.
We visited a couple other places Hemingway used to go, but a lot of them no longer existed and had turned into a different establishment. We got some snacks and walked to Jardin du Luxembourg. It was such a beautiful day!
Us with our friend, Kelly, in the garden.
Made our way back to Maison Georges Larnicol for some koignettes and chocolate. Still not sure what makes a koignette, but it's buttery and very chewy. We got a couple different flavors.
I found a picture of them closer up (courtesy of their website).
From there we walked back to Le Marais to Cafe des Musees, which was recommended in one of our tour books. They had good prices for really tasty food. Here's Tim enjoying his pot of summer vegetables, which was yummy! I actually liked the beets in it and wish I knew how they were cooked!
