Day 4 - July 14: Bastille Day

On Bastille Day, most museums are closed, but the Louvre is open to everyone for free!  Here we are getting in on the early side to avoid the huge line that formed later in the day.

Going into one of the halls.

La Jaconde - Mona Lisa.  Still crowds waiting to see her and take pictures!

This was called Le Deluge (the flood), but not necessarily about the biblical flood.  It was hard to get a good picture of it because of the coloring and lighting in the painting, but it was one of our favorites to admire.

Winged Victory of Samothrace.  I still remember learning about this in high school humanities!

See that line down at the bottom of the picture?  It goes all the way around that large glass pyramid to the entrance.  We were glad to be seeing it from the inside.

A closed-off entrance to the Louvre looked so majestic.

A sculpture hall.

The sculpture I remember loving when I was here in '99.  I still love it!  It's called (in French) the Nymph & the Scorpion.  She may have just been bitten on her toe, which is why she's looking at it.

Les Apartments de Napoleon.  He lived and worked in the palace du Louvre before it was a museum.  This was Le Grand Salon and it is incredibly ornate.

Le Grand Salle a Manger.  Dinner for 46 anyone?

That window in the back was definitely over 6 feet tall, so that puts this piece into perspective.  It's made out of metal and saw blades, I believe.  By Wim Delvoye.

Getting into the fresh air! It was getting really busy and stuffy in the museum.

And as we're leaving, we see this in the sky!

We tried to enjoy one of the many other free events in the city, but the timing just didn't work out.  So, we wandered to a cafe for some cafe cremes to plan our next move - buy some groceries and head back to the apartment.  We were so tired!
